Notes: The uniting principle of As it is it is, an installation piece for Kew Gardens that was viewable for three weeks in the Magnolia Grove, is self-similarity. There are multiple prongs to this work - the form of the piece itself, and the method of generating material based on the physical properties of the instrument I used. Extramusically, I was influenced by New Materialism, a philosophical movement exploring the ways in which non-humans such as objects and animals have their own agency, as well as fractal geometry in mathematics. A major influence on the musical choices made was the work of Harry Partch (1901 – 1974), the composer and instrument builder.
